The Sentencing Project

The Sentencing Project is a Washington D.C. based nonprofit research organization that seeks a fair criminal justice system in the United States. For over 30 years, The Sentencing Project has fought for criminal justice reform in sentencing policy, racial and gender inequality, voting rights, etc. On their website, you can get in contact with your state’s representatives through email and Twitter. They provide a prompt for both platforms that you can send or you can write your own.

The Sentencing Project reports that 1 in 7 inmates are given a life sentence. How many of those inmates actually committed the crime that they were incarcerated for? The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world at 655 per 100,000. This is because we started sending more people to prison for longer sentences and more crimes. For instance, since the beginning of the “War on Drugs” in the 1980s, the number of people incarcerated has increased drastically.
