Ethics is the study of what is right and wrong. It is from this concept that America built the criminal justice system that we have today. Ethics is what was used to decide what was criminal and how to punish those that broke the laws that had been set.
Ethics is an important aspect of the criminal justice system, without ethics, the criminal justice system would not be dependable. Police officers use ethics to determine how they should act with those that they encounter. When dealing with the public how an officer acts and holds themselves affects how the community sees them and how they will treat the officers. When dealing with criminals, it would be unethical for an officer to threaten or assault the offender. Officers must be unbiased when dealing with both criminals and the public, they have to be able to make decisions on how to protect the people while still abiding by the law. For a defense attorney being ethical is an important part of the job. They have to represent their client the best that they can even if the client is guilty. Defense attorneys must ensure that their client is always telling the truth as to not obscure the trial. A prosecuting attorney uses ethics to protect the defendant from being found guilty of a crime that they did not commit. Prosecuting attorneys use ethics to ensure that the people they call to the stand tell truthful testimonies and evidence that supports whatever they are trying to claim and that none of it is false. Ethics also plays a huge part in being a judge. A judge must make a decision without letting personal or religious beliefs interfere.
