Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who killed George Floyd has been sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison. Chauvin will have to serve two-thirds, 15 years, of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
Chauvin was convicted in April this year on charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter for his role in killing George Floyd.
In May 2020, Chauvin murdered Floyd by placing his knee on Floyd’s neck, ignoring Floyd’s pleas of having trouble breathing.
Due to the fact that Chauvin abused his position of authority; he treated Floyd with cruelty; there were children present at the time of the murder; and because Chauvin committed the crime with a group of at least three people, the judge sentenced Chauvin beyond the guidelines recommended for the crimes committed.
In addition to the murder of Floyd, Chauvin has been charged in a different indictment in which he used unreasonable force on a 14-year-old Minneapolis resident in September 2017, he is expected to be arraigned in that case in September.
