On the evening of June 23, 1993, Lorena Bobbitt severed her husband’s penis. Lorena stated that John had raped her that evening. After he went to bed, Lorena went to the kitchen and retrieved a knife, and proceeded to amputate her husband’s penis. Lorena then left their apartment with the severed penis, which she eventually threw into a field. She then called 911, informing them of what had happened and where they could locate John’s severed penis. Officers were able to locate his penis, and it was reattached at the hospital. Lorena was arrested that night; she told the officers about the abuse that she had suffered.
During the trial, Lorena stated that John sexually, physically, and emotionally abused her. Her defense attorneys claimed that John’s constant abuse led Lorena to have an emotional break in conjunction with her depression and an episode of PTSD. John denied ever abusing his wife. However, during cross-examination, several of his statements contradicted known facts of the case, which weakened the prosecutor’s case.
John was acquitted of marital sexual assault, and Lorena was found not guilty due to insanity. In 1995, the couple divorced. After this incident, John was arrested several times. In 1994, he was arrested and charged with battery and sentenced to fifteen days in jail. In 1999, John went on probation for his involvement in a theft at a store that same year. In 2003, John was sentenced to prison for violating his probation by assaulting his then-wife Joanna Ferrell. He was arrested again in 2004 for assaulting his wife. Lorena lived a quiet life after the incident in 1993 until 1997 when she was charged with assaulting her mother; however, Lorena was acquitted.
