On June 25th, 2010, Bonnie Woodward got in a man’s car and was never seen again.
On June 10, 2010, Bonnie’s stepdaughter ran away from home and had not made any contact with Bonnie, her siblings, or her stepsiblings. Later, it was discovered that the man in the car claimed he knew information about Heather’s whereabouts, so Bonnie willingly went with him. Bonnie’s boyfriend believed that she had gone out for drinks with some of her coworkers, so he was not concerned when she did not return home before he went to bed, but when she was still not home the following day, he called the police and filed a missing person report.
The police realized that both Bonnie and Heather had gone missing within three weeks of each other; the police did not think that this could be a coincidence and thought that if they could find Heather, they would also find Bonnie and vice versa.
On July 3rd, Heather went to the public library and identified herself as a missing person. The police questioned her about her location over the past three weeks. She told them that she had gone to stay with a teacher whom she had told that Bonnie was abusive. Then, on June 17th, she went to stay with Roger and Monica Carroll, whom she knew through church. The police also questioned the Carrolls, but they denied knowing anything about Bonnie’s disappearance, stating that they had been out of town on the date of her disappearance.
As time passed, months turned into years without any indication of Bonnie’s whereabouts.
In April of 2018, Roger Carroll was arrested for domestic violence. Roger assaulted his wife by hitting her, pushing her down, tasing her, and then locking her in a room of their home. After Roger was arrested, the police questioned Monica and their son Nathan again regarding Bonnie, hoping they would be willing to share more information about what had happened if they knew anything. Luckily for the police, the two did give them more information. Nathan willingly told the police everything.
Nathan told the police that his family did visit family like they had previously said. While they were gone, his father and Heather took a walk, and when Roger returned to the house, he told Nathan that the two of them would be returning home early. On the drive back to their home, Roger told Nathan that Bonnie was a bad person and that they would take care of her. They drove to Bonnie’s job and waited for her to leave. When she exited the building, Roger approached her and stated that he knew where Heather was and that Heather was willing to talk to Heather, but she (Bonnie) had to go with him to see her.
Roger then took her to his house, where he shot and killed her. Nathan stated that he saw Bonnie’s body on the ground. Roger made Nathan help him build a fire pit and place her body in it. Roger burned Bonnie’s body until there was almost nothing left of Bonnie. What did remain was taken to the creek. After hearing this, the police searched Carroll’s house. They found a 9mm shell casing on the ground in the area where Nathan indicated Bonnie had been killed. Nathan presented them with the gun his father used. When the police searched the location where the fire pit had been, they found bone fragments and a key. However, they could not prove that either belonged to Bonnie. Nathan also admits to destroying Bonnie’s phone per his father’s demand.
On April 12, 2018, Roger was charged with Bonnie’s murder, as well as unlawful restraint and domestic battery. Monica and Nathan were granted immunity in exchange for their corroboration; Monica confirmed parts of Nathan’s story, such as Roger and Nathan leaving their family member’s house early and the large fire in the yard.
Ultimately, Roger was found guilty of first-degree murder as well as guilty of discharging a firearm causing death, which enhanced his sentence. Roger was sentenced to 65 years for the murder of Bonnie Woodward.
